From record-breaking concrete pours to cutting-edge technology upgrades, Jonel’s innovative solutions have transformed Nevada Ready Mix’s Bonanza plant, enhancing production efficiency and driving success in some of Las Vegas' most iconic projects.
Located in the northwest corner of downtown Las Vegas, this high-production batch facility is capable of producing over 500+ cu yd/hr and has serviced both the Strip and outlying commercial and residential projects throughout the valley. The Bonanza location provided the necessary resources for such a high-output facility, featuring ample space for independent loading alleys and two slurry batchers in one stationary plant.
"I’ve learned that it takes more than just a high-speed production facility to batch concrete at the pace we’ve become accustomed to,” says Hank Brown Sr., Automation Technician. “It takes a total team effort.” On one record-setting day in February, Nevada Ready Mix loaded 7,000 cubic yards of material in 13 hours using 85 mixers to pour a 12,000-yard footing at the new wing of Caesar’s Palace resort. Although they averaged about 500 yards per hour, they managed to produce a remarkable 640 yards in a single sixty-minute interval. Today, they still use quick batching methods to reduce drum wear on trucks.
Since the plant’s opening, it has been hard-wired with conduit and steel pipe throughout. However, the connection boxes and pipes have started to fail, causing major shutdowns. Jonel and Nevada Ready Mix found a solution by using Jonel’s OptRIO remote I/O device cards. This allowed Jonel to place remote boxes throughout the plant to control devices remotely, eliminating the legacy field wiring and junction boxes. A smaller box was placed in the main office to read the scale and control the admixture tanks. By using only CAT5 cable for communication, thousands of dollars in cabling costs were saved.
The remote boxes control both relays and limit switches, with each box capable of handling 96 I/O points. The new wiring is clearly marked and easy to locate, saving Nevada Ready Mix significant time and money in troubleshooting plant issues, while making future upgrades much simpler to manage.
